Our wonderful lovey (named, obviously, for how sweet she is) gave us 6 beautiful babies yesterday. While we have had a few pigs farrow out this year, this was a new experience for me. I was able to be there and move in and out freely without worry. Watching these babies be born was a gift I will be grateful for for a very long time.
Often times when pigs farrow their personalities can change. Your once loving pig can all of a sudden start lashing out at you if you get too close to her. As a pig parent all you want to do is help and comfort and try to make sure everything is okay! But when they won’t let you near them it makes it so much harder to deal with any emergencies if they arise. It puts you and your pigs at risk.
We personally don’t like to keep pigs that get aggressive when having babies and once the babies arrive. If you can’t even get into the pen without the threat of being bit, the pig should go. It makes it hard especially when they are a good mom to their babies but the safety of your human family needs to come first!
